The Wreck

Adult • General Interest
Best friends reunited in a house Set in the English countryside Old tensions resurface among friends Years apart lead to new conflicts Perspectives shift in shared living

Charlotte and Francesca were best friends at university in the mid-1970s, but tensions deepened when Fran began a relationship with Charlotte’s friend Adrian and the women drifted apart. Years later Fran contacts Charlotte with an unusual proposal: an invitation to live with her and Adrian in the rambling house they have bought in the English countryside.

Charlotte persuades her partner Bill to join them, and their new life initially feels utopian as space and routines are shared. Old tensions and shifting desires soon rise to the surface, shattering their illusions and revealing each person in a different light. The book is an illustrated novel that tracks these breakdowns in relationship.

Two former friends and their partners move into a shared country house, where old tensions and new desires test their experiment in communal living.

What to Know Before Reading The Wreck

Interpersonal dynamics among two former friends, their partners, and the decision to form a shared household in the English countryside. Much of the setup centers on social arrangements, household intimacy, and the resurfacing of past grievances. The conflict appears driven by relationships, envy, and desire rather than external action or plot mechanics. The inclusion of illustrations and a genre-defying approach indicates the book pays close attention to character interactions and shifting emotional perspectives.
