John-Calum faces his father's disapproval Grandmother Ella offers unconditional support Secrets unravel during shearing season Isle of Harris provides a haunting backdrop Family ties are tested and revealed

Out of money and with little to show for his art school education, John-Calum Macleod takes the ferry back to the Isle of Harris in the Outer Hebrides and finds that little has changed except for him. He returns to the windswept croft and the two pillars of his childhood: his father John, a sheep farmer, tweed weaver, and lay preacher in the local Presbyterian church, and his maternal grandmother Ella, a profanity-loving Glaswegian whose steady warmth helped Cal weather his mother’s sudden departure.

Cal privately wonders whether any lonely men might be found on the barren hillsides of home, while John is dismayed by his son’s long hair, strange clothes, and seeming unwillingness to be Saved. Cal is not the only person in the croft house keeping secrets, and as lambing season turns to shearing season the threads holding the community together become increasingly frayed, so that nothing will remain as it was before.

John-Calum returns from art school to the Isle of Harris and must confront his father John’s dismay, his grandmother Ella’s steadiness, and hidden secrets.

Family Life Fiction

Reader guide

What to Know Before Reading John of John

Family tensions produced by a son’s return to a Hebridean croft and a father’s stern religious expectations. Much of the setup centers on interpersonal conflict, seasonal farming life, and the household dynamics between John, Cal, and Ella. A quietly stated queer element is implied by Cal’s private questions about lonely men on the hillsides. This may appeal more to someone interested in intimate portrayals of duty, desire, and communal strain within a rural Scottish setting.
