The Bad Beginning: A Darkly Comic Literary Tale about the Baudelaire Orphans for Children (Ages 8-12)
A Series of Unfortunate Events • Book 1 of 13
Siblings navigate a cruel new home Count Olaf schemes to steal their fortune They face absurd adults and tricky situations Violet's inventions play a crucial role Will the children outwit their sinister guardian?

Miserably scrawled by Lemony Snicket and illustrated by Brett Helquist, this story follows Violet, Klaus, and Sunny Baudelaire, three intelligent and resourceful siblings who are exceptionally unlucky. The children are charming and have pleasant facial features, but their lives change abruptly when they learn their parents have died and that they are orphans overnight.

In what the narrator calls a very bad beginning, the Baudelaires are placed in the care of the repulsive and sinister Count Olaf. With their family fortune at stake, the siblings must endure itchy clothing, boiled potatoes, shamefully incompetent adults, and an unwanted wedding while trying to survive Olaf's greed and schemes.

After their parents' deaths, siblings Violet, Klaus, and Sunny Baudelaire are placed under the sinister care of Count Olaf, who seeks their family fortune.

What to Know Before Reading A Series of Unfortunate Events

The description focuses on three orphaned siblings, their sudden loss, and an external antagonist in Count Olaf. Much of the setup centers on practical miseries and humiliations such as itchy clothing, boiled potatoes, and an unwanted wedding. The tone is presented as dark comedy with illustrations by Brett Helquist accompanying the narration. This may appeal more to someone interested in a story driven by mishap, danger from an adult guardian, and a bleakly comic perspective on childhood misfortune.

About the author

Lemony Snicket

Lemony Snicket

Lemony Snicket is both a celebrated children's author pseudonym and a complex fictional character. In the real world, Lemony Snicket is the pen name of American author Daniel Handler, born on February 28, 1970, in San Francisco, California. Handler originally invented the name while researching a right-wing organization for a different book project, but later revived it to serve as the immersive, distinct voice for his masterwork, A Series of Unfortunate Events. When appearing at public events, Handler often plays the part of Snicket's "handler" or representative, frequently telling rooms full of children that Mr. Snicket could not attend due to a sudden and terrible disaster. About the artist: Brett Helquist’s celebrated art has graced books from the charming BEDTIME FOR BEAR to the alarming New York Times bestselling A Series of Unfortunate Events by Lemony Snicket , to the glorious picture book adaptation of Charles Dickens’ A CHRISTMAS CAROL. He lives with his family in Brooklyn, NY.
