Then they find something. Something impossible. When a should-be-extinct bee crawls from the ravaged earth, Solma knows this could be the miracle her world needs to recover, but it could also lead to war.

What to Know Before Reading The Last Beekeeper

Fearnley’s The Last Beekeeper is a evocative, speculative novel that drops readers into a beautifully realized but deeply fragile future where the natural world hangs by a thread. The story follows a poignant journey of survival, community, and environmental collapse, focusing on the profound connection between humans and the essential pollinators we so often take for granted. It manages to balance a sobering warning about ecological decay with an intimate, character-driven narrative.

Through its atmospheric prose, the book explores how isolated societies adapt when the foundational elements of their ecosystem vanish, forcing the characters to confront both their past mistakes and an uncertain tomorrow.

About the author

Rebecca L. Fearnley

Rebecca L. Fearnley

Rebecca has been obsessed with two things since she learned to walk and talk: stories and animals. Luckily, the two seem to be very compatible. Rebecca writes stories set in strange worlds filled with bizarre creatures, strong female characters and magical powers. She started her writing career as a poet, performing all over the country and publishing her first collection, Octopus Medicine, with Two Rivers Press in 2017. In addition to writing, Rebecca is also a teacher and, in 2018, decided that she wanted to write quality books for the young people she works withm as well as for adults. Her books tend towards themes of respect for the environment, protecting the planet and the new generations challenging the old to face up to their mistakes. She lives in Reading, UK, with her unusual family, which includes herself, her partner, and a gregarious and feisty quaker parrot (called Maya).
