The Vanishing Half

Adult • General Interest
Twins choose different racial identities Set in the Deep South and California Spans from the 1950s to 1990s Daughters' paths eventually intersect Themes of identity and family ties

The Vignes twin sisters were inseparable as children but ultimately choose to live in two very different worlds: one black, one white. After growing up in a small southern black community and running away at sixteen, the twins build separate lives—one returns to the southern town she once tried to escape and raises a black daughter there, while the other secretly passes for white and keeps her past hidden from her white husband. Although separated by miles and long-held lies, their fates remain intertwined.

Weaving multiple strands and generations from the Deep South to California and spanning the 1950s to the 1990s, the narrative follows what happens when their daughters' storylines intersect. The novel examines how the past shapes decisions, desires, and expectations and explores the reasons some people are pulled to live as something other than their origins.

What to Know Before Reading The Vanishing Half

The Vignes twin sisters split after running away at sixteen: one lives openly black with her daughter in their southern hometown, while the other passes for white and hides her past from her husband. Their long-kept secrets and divergent identities reverberate across decades and places—from the Deep South to California between the 1950s and the 1990s—producing consequences when their daughters' lives intersect. The story centers on identity, secrecy, and the influence of family history on choices and desires, and it traces how private pasts shape the next generation.
