Juxtaposes past events with present Captures impressions from global travels Explores social and personal dislocation Features vivid street and monument imagery Addresses modern life and identity

This selection gathers poems that address the problems of modern life, each piece drawn from historical sights or from impressions of existence observed around the world. The collection presents poems that move from close, observational sketches of place to wider meditations on social and personal dislocation, using concrete images of streets, monuments, ruins, and everyday scenes to examine contemporary experience.

Arranged to shift between public history and private memory, the poems juxtapose past and present to show how inherited events and physical sites shape present anxieties and hopes. Through vivid detail and carefully chosen images, the selection traces how impressions made by history and travel persist in the imagination and inform responses to modernity.

About the author

Robert Lowell

Robert Lowell

Robert Traill Spence Lowell IV (; March 1, 1917 – September 12, 1977) was an American poet. He was born into a Boston Brahmin family that could trace its origins back to the Mayflower. His ancestors and contemporary family were important subjects in his poetry. Growing up in Boston also informed his poems, which were frequently set in Boston and the New England region. Literary scholar Paula Hayes argues that, particularly in his early work, Lowell mythologized New England.
