Tom Joad returns to Oklahoma Ma Joad becomes family leader Jim Casy develops a new philosophy Pa Joad faces loss of land Rose of Sharon matures through hardship

Tom Joad is a pragmatic ex-convict returning to Oklahoma after four years in prison. Hardened but fiercely protective of his family, he initially focuses only on immediate survival. However, witnessing the systemic cruelty faced by migrant workers forces him to evolve from a detached individualist into a passionate leader driven by a deep sense of social justice.

Ma Joad, the resilient matriarch, serves as the ultimate backbone of the family. When hardship breaks the traditional male authority, she steps forward to lead, driven by a fierce determination to keep her kin unified.

Jim Casy is a former preacher who abandoned traditional religion after a crisis of faith. Prone to deep introspection, he develops a new, humanistic philosophy that views all human souls as part of one massive, collective spirit. He ultimately acts as the moral compass of the story, translating his ideas of brotherhood into courageous social action.

Pa Joad begins as a proud, hardworking provider but is slowly broken by the loss of his land.

Rose of Sharon, Tom's younger sister, starts the journey as a naive, self-absorbed pregnant teenager. The grueling migration forces a rapid, painful maturity upon her. Through immense personal loss, she transforms into a powerful symbol of ultimate human compassion and communal survival.
