About the Book

The Stranger

Meursault, a detached and indifferent French Algerian living in Algiers. Shortly after learning of his mother’s death, he becomes entangled in a series of seemingly random events that lead to a senseless crime on a scorching beach. The narrative explores alienation, absurdity, and the burden of human existence. Meursault is the emotionally distant protagonist who refuses to play by society's unwritten rules of performance and grief. His lover, Marie Cardona, is a cheerful former typist from his office who longs for a traditional marriage and cannot comprehend his profound psychological detachment. Raymond Sintès, a volatile neighbor claiming to be a warehouse guard, draws Meursault into a dangerous web of domestic disputes and local rivalries.
