All the Light We Cannot See

Marie-Laure lives with her father in Paris near the Museum of Natural History, where he is the master of its thousands of locks. She goes blind at six, and her father builds a miniature of their neighborhood so she can memorize it by touch; when she is twelve they flee Nazi-occupied Paris for the walled citadel of Saint-Malo to live with her reclusive great uncle and carry what might be the museum’s most valuable and dangerous jewel. In a German mining town, orphan Werner grows up with his sister and becomes skilled at building and fixing radios after finding a crude receiver. His talent wins him a place at a brutal academy for Hitler Youth and then a wartime assignment tracking the Resistance, which sends him toward Saint-Malo and the intersecting paths of his and Marie-Laure’s lives.
