All the Broken Places

Ninety-one-year-old Gretel Fernsby lives in a well-to-do London mansion block, keeping to herself and refusing to speak about an escape from Nazi Germany at age twelve. She has spent decades carrying a deeply disturbing past: grim postwar years in France with her mother and the knowledge that her father was the commandant of one of the Reich's most notorious extermination camps. When a new family moves into the flat below, Gretel begins an unexpected friendship with their little boy, Henry. His presence and a violent argument between Henry's parents force Gretel to confront memories and choices she has suppressed, and to face a present crossroads that echoes an earlier moral crisis.
