About the Book

The Underground Railroad in the Adirondack Region

The success of the Underground Railroad depended on the participation of sympathizers in hundreds of areas throughout the country, each operating independently. Each area was distinctive both geographically and societally. This work focuses on the contributions of people in the Adirondack region, including their collaboration with operatives from Albany to New York City. Drawing on over a decade of research and local archives, the author transformed northern New York's Underground Railroad legends into documented history, utilizing weekly abolitionist newspapers published between 1841 and 1848 like Friend of Man, Liberator, Pennsylvania Freeman, Emancipator, National Anti-Slavery Standard, and Albany Patriot. The book also features extensive maps (including station locations by county), photographs, appendices, key contributor profiles, and accounts of abolition meetings and conventions.
