Jean McClellan spends her days in near silence, limited to just one hundred words a day; speak more and a thousand volts of electricity will course through her veins. When a new government takes power, everything changes— but only for women. Almost overnight bank accounts are frozen, passports are seized, and seventy million women lose their jobs. Young girls are no longer taught to read or write. Jean refuses to accept being muted. For herself, her daughter, and for every woman who has been silenced, she begins to reclaim her voice, even as speaking more risks the thousand-volt punishment. Her attempts to resist set the stakes for a struggle over language, freedom, and the rights of girls and women.
