About the Book

Growing Up on Rt. 66

Growing Up on Rt. 66 is the memoir of two farm siblings, Ray (born 1935) and Theresa (born 1944), who lived on a 200-acre tenant farm at the 100-milepost from downtown Chicago. Their gravel driveway led directly to the legendary Rt. 66, and early life on the farm meant no running water, no electricity, and no central heating. The siblings describe a family of four whose daily life depended on close cooperation with the land, the weather, and neighboring families. Travelers on Rt. 66 brought occasional exposure to the outside world, but they rarely altered the basic character of rural life on the farm.
