Lily seeks answers about her mother Rosaleen confronts local racists Three beekeeping sisters offer refuge Set against the backdrop of racial tensions A household centered on a Black Madonna

Set in South Carolina in 1964, The Secret Life of Bees follows Lily Owens, whose life is shaped by the blurred memory of the afternoon her mother was killed. Lily lives with her fierce-hearted stand-in mother, Rosaleen, whose confrontation with three of the town’s fiercest racists prompts Lily to flee with her to Tiburon, South Carolina, a place that holds a connection to her mother’s past.

In Tiburon they are taken in by an eccentric trio of Black beekeeping sisters. The sisters introduce Lily to a world of bees and honey and to a household centered on a Black Madonna figure as they become entwined in questions about family and identity.

In 1964 South Carolina, Lily Owens runs away to Tiburon with Rosaleen after Rosaleen insults three of the town’s fiercest racists, seeking answers about Lily’s mother.

What to Know Before Reading The Secret Life of Bees

The description focuses on a young woman’s escape and her search for family origins against a 1964 Southern backdrop of racial hostility. Much of the setup centers on Lily’s relationship with Rosaleen and their arrival at a household run by three Black beekeeping sisters. The book appears to emphasize everyday life, community rituals around bees and honey, and a prominent Black Madonna figure. This may appeal more to someone interested in character relationships, historical social tension, and domestic mysteries tied to personal history.
