Fast-talking private eye Philip Marlowe is a moral man in an amoral California of the 1940s and 1950s. He forms an uneasy friendship with a drunk named Terry Lennox, and when Lennox turns up late one night, guilty and asking for a ride to the Tijuana airport, Marlowe agrees despite his unease.

Soon Lennox’s wealthy, adulterous wife is found murdered; Marlowe is arrested; and Lennox is later discovered dead in Mexico, an apparent suicide accompanied by a signed confession. At the same time Marlowe is hired to watch over an author and ensure he delivers his next book, forcing him to juggle two increasingly dangerous cases. As corruption and deceit close in, Marlowe must fight to retain his integrity and survive.

What to Know Before Reading The Long Goodbye

Philip Marlowe's reluctant aid to a drunk named Terry Lennox drags him into overlapping crises: a murdered socialite, a suspect's flight to Mexico and an apparent suicide, while he simultaneously watches an author to ensure delivery of a book. Marlowe must navigate police suspicion, wealthy adultery, and widespread corruption in 1940s–50s California, testing his personal code and survival instincts. The novel examines loyalty, moral compromise, and the cost of holding to an individual code amid deceit and danger as Marlowe balances legal peril and personal obligation.
