Pale Fire offers a cornucopia of deceptive pleasures, ingeniously constructed as a parody of detective fiction and learned commentary. Surrounding Shade's poem is a foreword and commentary by the demented scholar Charles Kinbote, who mixes literary analysis with the strange tale of an assassin from Zembla in pursuit of a deposed king. This vividly inventive work showcases Nabokov's mastery of perfect tragicomic balance.
