BOOK REVIEW: Lessons in Chemistry by Bonnie Garmus

Have you ever started watching an expensive drama series and then drifted away around the third episode? Writers often cram so much into the start to get you hooked but then have to pad out the story to fill their contracted 10 episodes.

I started to watch the Apple TV series of Lessons in Chemistry and got through three episodes. The memory of the show has faded now, drifted away like clouds across a windy sky. There is not a scene or plot point I can honestly recall.

However, the original book by Bonnie Garmus is a different proposition. It has hit me hard and stayed with me. It has opened conversations, made me laugh and confirmed my view that rowers love to talk about rowing. All The Time. I know this because my wife is a competitive rower.

Book review: VALIS by Philip K. Dick

Let me begin by saying that VALIS is not science fiction. It is not a good book, either. It barely holds a plot, and instead contains little less than incoherent ramblings and conspiracy theories from a very disturbed mind, which goes off tangent even before a narrative line is established. And yet, the book has an almost hypnotic quality for the average reader, and as I’m told (I’m no expert), it provides for a great insight into certain mental illnesses.

Book Review

One of the most incredible stories of WWII and the Holocaust

This book should be mandatory reading for high school and college classes on why we fought WWII and the incredible resilience of two very young men that survived the Holocaust with the caring of D Company. The author does an awesome job of intertwining the story of young US WWII soldiers and the two young survivors that they save at the end of the war. There will be times when this story hits home and becomes very emotional for the readier.
