Aubrey Lamb, thirty-two and an underpaid gig worker in Washington, DC, is reeling from a breakup and her father’s death when she inherits his share of a Tennessee farm. She sees the stake in the property as a way out of the city and a chance to erase mounting debt, but the farm is full of family secrets and occupied by four ancestral ghosts who comment on the living. The narrative alternates with the land’s history, beginning with Thomas, Aubrey’s great-grandfather and one of the first Black landowners in his community, who hoped to give his children a homestead. Over time the property becomes a burdensome inheritance that foments division, culminating in a catastrophic tragedy that splinters the Lamb family. With a potential sale looming, Aubrey must weigh her forebears’ hopes and burdens against her own future.
